The Auction

The Auction

On a slate gray November day
the farm felt the auction hammer .
My herd of cattle left today....
Going , going, going, gone!

The black mare has a new home.
Twenty five cent for a garden hoe.
An oil painting of my mothers face....
Going once, twice, three times, gone!

One dollar ten for a crystal vase.
The heirloom quilt three bucks even.
My antique clock, a western saddle.....
Going , going, going, gone!

The rocking chair my father made
Children's toys now sold away
Silver gray pony, belonged to my son.......
Going once, going twice, thrice, gone!

By some strange twist of fate
Under the auction hammer
All my possessions must depart ~
Dignity was the first to leave......

Going once, twice, three times, gone.!

I love the rythm of this poem, and how the memories seem to flit away under the tapping of a hammer. Everything that had meant so much now taken away for just so little.

Without a doubt a great one. I grew up on a hillside farm. Thanks.

This is such a wonderful depiction of the demise of an American Institution. I've been here, Kay Lee. Once you are discontent to the limit of your endurance, write to me so that we two can run off together....okay?

Warm hugs!
Lyle

A perfect picture of the dieing of true Ammerican Agriculture, the family farm. Great report, even a better poem.. I will visit this one often.

Nice description of the fast pace of an auction...and what people gain or lose in a bid!

Kay Lee I remember standing at the auction as they sold my great grandma and grandpa's belongings at the auction crying as each prec ious memory of them was carried away in the arms of a stranger. This poem touched me deeply the excution and imagery was immcaulate.
