Midnight Stroll
by Gregory Christiano (Age: 61)
copyright 04-29-2003

Age Rating: 18 to 127

The sky unroll'd its darkened clouds,
Desolated souls did walk the night,
Hideous, eyeless, ghoulish shrouds,
Dry dust of death appears in fright!

Murmurs heard in breathless song,
Come creeping up to crush the day.
When midnight bells cease tolling long,
A thousand shrieks come our way.

They're hunting for our flesh and blood!
Each night they bring upon us dread.
Doomed to walk through deepest mud,
Cursing, panting, vile they tread.

One night like this I took a stroll,
And passed an open graveyard gate.
No warning came to me at all,
The track seemed clear, calm and safe.

Faintly through the dark black air,
Maniacal laughter touched my ear,
Slow turned to peer beyond gate's there
Foul odors heightened all my fear.

I froze! Like some stone-made bust,
Trembling, wide-eyed, not too brave.
Dwelling-place of dead men must
Be calling from their restless grave.

"Come now, what powers be?
"To pass the ferried River Styx.
"Back from death's reign to see
"Withering scornful ghosts to fix!

"Fixed upon this dreadful night,
"No, more! God let this vision pass.
"I pray to never see this sight
"And kneel at Requiem's daily Mass."

Thinking many fearful thoughts,
Unclean spirits slowly come.
The dark grew darker and it was fraught
With hellish wraiths to make me numb.

I stood there frozen! Pinned to earth.
The voices grew louder, coming close.
Thump, thump, thumping they did assert,
Around my neck like an albatross.

I could not scream!
I could not move!
In this horrid, fetid dream,
I struggled fiercely, tried to prove...

It was only a bad dream.
"Wake up you fool."
The laughter fading, though it seemed,
I stood within a sweat-filled pool.

Oh God! My breath, it had returned.
My covers thrown upon the floor.
I sat up quickly there to learn,
My dream had been the evildoer!
