*This was actually a creative writing assignment, which I over did (as usual)*
CHARACTERS
Regina- (me, way exaggerated)
Zane- Regina’s best friend. Blondish-white hair, and a teasing attitude. Hobby: building remote control cars, planes, etc.
Jenny- (extra minor character) cheerleader, and school newspaper editor. Dark-brown hair, and brown eyes.
Amy- (minor character) class genius, witty, short brownish hair and brown eyes (in uniform).
Mr. Parker- Social studies teacher. Extremely bored and sarcastic social studies teacher.
____________
“Rrrinnnggggg”
The class bell rang for the last period of school on the first day after vacation. The room was hot and humid, and was filled with the same sweet, familiar scent of dust and chalk. The students came in the classroom, some talkative and excited to see their friends again, and other like they just rose from the dead.
“Alright, settle down, class is now in session. If you’re absent, let me know.” Mr. Parker announced sarcastically.
“Jenny?”
“Here.”
“Robert?”
“Present.”
“Jason?”
“Wishing he was someplace else.”
“Yeah, who isn’t? Eric?”
“Not absent.”
“Regina?”
“Regina?…”
“Wha…what…I’m awake” Regina said astonished, waking up from her perfect dream to find herself the laughing stock of the class.
“I’m here.”
“You do know when she says that, she means only physically.” Zane said teasing.
“Knock it off.” Regina said, pushing him aside.
“I’m glad you’ve joined us, Miss. Crystal, but if you don’t mind, I’d like to get back to the attendance. Amy?”
“Present.”
“Kelly?…”
“I cannot believe the vacation went by so fast. Can this class be any more boring!?”
“Come on, Z, you’ll live, besides there’s only 40 more minutes till freedom.”
“Alright, I know it’s hot, but try to raise you attention spans long enough for us to learn about the fascinating subject of history.”
“Pssst. This guy should have applied for a sleep therapist job, he could put the most stressed out person to sleep in a couple of seconds. Either that or he’ll bore them to death.”
“Today were going to be learning about the Underground Railroad. Who were some of the conductors of the railroad?” Mr. Parker asked monotonously.
Amy’s hand goes up.
“Amy.”
“Harriet Tubman, and Frederick Douglas.”
“Very good as usual, Amy.”
“There she goes again, strait A Amy,” Jenny said, dropping her head.
“Hey, Ames, bettcha don’t know when they were born.” Regina asked daringly.
“Harriet Tubman was born in 1820 and died in 1913, at the age of 93, and Frederick Douglas was born in 1817 and died in 1895, at the age of 78.”
“Very good, Amy, I didn’t even know that,” Mr. Parker said in astonishment.
“That’s because your human, Mr. P. She’s not… So Amy, how many microchips are you hiding inside that oversized brain of yours?”
“Very funny, Zane.”
“(laughs) Alright, that’s enough. Now as few of you know, the Underground Railroad was not a railroad at all, it was actually a passage to lead the slaves to freedom, and as Amy said, Harriet Tubman, and Frederick Douglas were some of its most famous and successful conductors, or leaders……………….(30 minutes later)………….There were also secret places the slaves could go if they got lost or needed food or shelter.”
“Rrrinnngggg”
“FREEDOM”
“Now don’t forget to read the first two chapters of your book for HW, and answer the three questions about them.”
“Come on, come on, hurry up, Reg. I’ve built this awesome new model…I call it the X-Wing 2000.”
“Question. Why do you name all your cars after Star Wars ships?”
“Little do you know, this one’s a plane and it actually flies. And Star wars is cool.”
“Yeah, for extra-terrestrials like you,” Regina replied, frowning a smile.
Zane, impatient to get home and show her the model, grabbed Regina by the arm and dragged her out of the classroom.
“Hey!”
“Do you have any idea how slow you are?”
“Not as slow as your brain chemistry is right now, I almost fell on my face, thanks to you.”
“Your welcome.” Zane said teasingly, pushing her towards the exit.
“Alright, alright, I’m going.”
Walking down the street, Zane was obviously boring Regina about his new model, as she tried to smile and sympathize with his excitement.
“…and it has this awesome two-way controller, and you could even put stuff in it like a water balloon, or a hamster. It’s perfectly safe....”
As they were about to cross the street, something happened that both would remember for a long time.
“Daniel? DANIEL!? Somebody help me, my baby’s missing. Daniel!?”
“Look over there!” someone shouted
“Whoa, it’s a kid!” Zane shouted, realizing what was going on.
The little boy was right in the middle of a street with speeding cars all around.
“Reggie?” Zane looked around franticly, but couldn’t find her anywhere.
“Daniel!” The little boy’s mother shouted in terror.
Just then, someone ran towards the boy, grabbing him, and collapsing on the other side of the street, just seconds before a car almost ran both of them over.
Zane, the mother, and several other spectators ran towards them.
“Reggie?” Zane asked in astonishment. He couldn’t believe it, his friend, his dorky friend that made pasta come out of her nose every time someone dared her, and who slept in a room filled to the ceiling with stuffed animals actually saved a life!
“Yeah, it’s me.” Regina answered, just opening her eyes and holding the little boy, no older than 4 or 5 tightly to her chest.
Regina let go of the boy, letting the mother hug him.
As soon as the boy got out of his mother’s ‘torture’, he turned to his rescuer and smiled, showing his missing teeth.
‘Hi, my name’s Daniel. That was fun, can we do it again?”
“Stick to ferris wheels and roller coasters, kid.” Regina said, realizing what she had just done, and letting her adrenaline settle.
“Kay. Hey, I found a shiny pebble, you wan it?”
“Sure, thanks a lot.” Regina said, taking the pebble as if it was the best trophy in the world.
“You saved my child’s life, I can’t even begin to thank you.” the mother said tears, dripping down her cheeks.
“Please, don’t. I know you’re grateful and I’m really happy that your son is alright, but I really have to be somewhere, so if you’ll excuse me, I’m kind of late. Come on, Z. Bye, Daniel, and careful next time, kay?”
“Kay.” Daniel said, waving goodbye.
“Whoa, I still can’t believe you just did that!” Zane said as they were walking towards his house.
“To tell you the truth, I can’t believe I did that either. But don’t worry, next time, I’ll let you play the hero.”
“Next time!?”
“Sure, there’s a hero in each of us, and there’ll always be someone in trouble or some kind of danger. I don’t really think you have to think about or choose to be the hero of a situation, it just happens.”
“Yeah right, easy for you to say, Miss. Kim Possible.”
“So, about your X-Wing 3000 thing, how high can it go, and is it solar powered, or what?”
“Somehow, that doesn’t seem important right now.” Zane said smiling and not believing his own ears.
“Ugh.” Regina said, pushing him away and into a wall.
“Hey, I’m gonna get you for that, and don’t think I’m gonna go easy on you just because you’re a girl.”
“You’ll have to catch me first.” Regina said laughing, and running away towards the horizon.
The End (finally)
