"The plans are laid," the architect said,
The square-limbed stone cutter overlaid,
"The marble mantlepiece is made."
"Fine work, my friend," he said, unbraided,
"We fight time with marble," the carver replied.
They turned then to the outside facade,
"These stones will last a thousand years," the
carver did beam,
"Yes, we challenge oblivion," the architect deemed.
"It's a monument we build," he disclosed,
"Let's look to the masonry," the plans composed.
"The manson and ironwork's are set," the cutter
interposed.
"Wonderful work on the fountains, yet,
"I see even greater need to get
"The columns carved and designed in rosette."
"An easy task for me to do,
"I'll delicately chisel and billet-doux,
"The mouldings I'll finely engrave and hew."
"Your genius is obvious, good friend."
The architect took the cutter's hand,
And pointed to another plan.
The blueprint laid open, a drawing to share.
Together they toiled through many a night,
To build, construct, create and delight.
With lifelong skills, devotion and sweat,
With a great work of art, their destinies met.
