The Night Watch
by Kay Lee Kelly
copyright 10-02-2002

Age Rating: 1 to 127

Night Watch

Side by side we watched the sky.
orange to rose then twilight gray,
feel the daylight slipping away.
We escort the setting sun,
painting the clouds has begun
Black now shows a thousand lights,
stars have entered , command the night.

He rests his head on the pasture gate,
together , every night we wait
He wanders off to the half dead pine.
His shadows outlined by the moonshine,
dust from the path with each step is tossed.
With this some of the ground is lost.
ever changing the stockyard view,
we share this together just us two.

He gives a sigh and wanders away,
chases the kittens away from the hay.
We will be back before the dawn,
watch the dew burn off the lawn.
Peach pale soft and blushing rose,
are the colors this morning chose.
To steak the pond and glaze the sky,
a streak of splendor, then good-bye.

The pale silver sky is our view,
clouds changing to a dull pale hue.
He leaves to inspect the rusty windmill,
stops in the sunlight to kill the chill.
Three years together in the sun and shade,
walking through the prairie sage.

A sad longing in his eyes as he drinks in the view
Never asking me, do you love this too?

There are some things you just must do,
I open the gate and let him go through.
Head held high he jumps to a lope,
gallops away up the meadow slope.
Out in the sagebrush he will stay,
The last of the Mustangs will live his way.

Stopping to read the desert air,
Finds the scent of his love, the mare.
Filled with pride and stepping high,
cross the flatland, she is near by.
Together at last, never to part
They run up the canyon at a fast trot.

Does he ever think of me,
or am I just the fool that set him free?

One will be watching the evening sky.

To read this poem is a true pleasure! A poetical aquarelle!
“We will be back before the dawn,
watch the dew burn off the lawn.” That’s splendid! Thank you Kay. – Irina.

Kelly the Mustang was me ...

One of my favorites by my favorite poetess. The word portraits you paint are like old masters - watching us as we look at them with their contemplating, yet introspective, ancient eyes. You have a special gift, Kay Lee. You always touch my heart and speak to something I thought was long lost and buried. Warmest Regards, Lyle

KayLee: Beautiful. As a horse lover (as you probably know), this touches me, deeply.

Yeah.

I particularly liked the rythm and the pacing of the thing.

Oh how beautiful....I do love the prairie lands...and you have just painted such a beautiful scene in my mind...outstanding!

That was beautiful. It sounds more like a poem then lyrics. I can't write, not one bit. Your work is 10 times better then what mine could ever be. Keep up the good work. :(

Every bit as powerful as before... great job, Kaylee.

"To streak the pond and glaze the sky, a streak of splendor and then goodbye." I love this... many images, one ideal, and you captured it.

So nostalgically tragic and poignantly beautiful Kaylee. This is truly my favorite of your many wonderful, expressive word portraits.
Hugs!
