Tale Of Joan Of Arc
by Janet Owenby
copyright 05-27-2003

Age Rating: 10 to 127

Maiden prancing about the fairy tree,
sanctified by apparitions untold.
Counsel of spirits charting her journey,
as destination begins to unfold.

Obeying the urging voices’ command
seeking the commander to the king.
Relaying messages upon demand,
admonished by his bitter retorts sting.

The archangel bidding her to return,
presenting her service before the throne.
Expressing to royalty her deep concern,
revealing a prayer only he had known.

Shearing her flowing silk tresses of hair,
veiling her chassis in masculine disguise.
Foretold prophecies she would now declare,
appearing as male before English eyes.

Waving the sacred French banner of white,
bearing her mighty sword and silver shield.
Riding in armor like the gallant knight,
leading troops to the bloody battlefield.

Bringing about the English troops defeat,
earning a seat by the reigning king's side.
Saints declared holy mission incomplete,
and support from royalty was denied.

Assistance rejected by royal court,
leading her followers into conflict.
Divine mission she refused to abort,
until she forced enemies to evict.

Seized by the Burgundian Regime,
relinquished to English custody.
Dictating her visions were not a dream,
on trial for heresy and sorcery.

She persisted Saint’s Counsel was real,
as her death conviction was announced.
Confession of sins brought later appeal,
and a life sentence was pronounced.

Refusing to shed her masculine wool,
condemned an evil sorceress and liar.
The heroines concluding fate was cruel,
as her soul was consumed by raging fire.

Twenty-fives years after her last breath,
her cruel sentence was again overturned.
After her suffering and violent death;
her title as heroine and saint returned.

Janet, this is a great tribute to Joan of Arc and I only found one small spelling error..3rd stanza, 'thrown' should be 'throne'.
