Gallery: Sailor Heavy Metal Papillon |
Sailor Heavy Metal Papillon exists only in the manga, and not the anime (*sniff*sniff*). Her name comes from the French word "papillon," which means "butterfly." This part of her name is commonly misspelled or mispronounced. It should be pronounced "pah-pee-yahn." The double L sound sounds like a Y. In many countries all over the world (including Japan), butterflies are often seen as being the souls of the deceased. The butterfly's transformation from a caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly is symbolic of the soul's profound change from life to death. Heavy Metal Papillon is from the planet Cocoon (as noted in the Materials Collection Artbook), perhaps further symbolizing transformation: her own change from an innocent person into an evil Animamate under Galaxia's control. The Materials Collection states that Heavy Metal Papillon manipulates fire in order to attack. This is another reference to butterflies: butterflies and moths are attracted to flame.
Sailor Heavy Metal Papillon's story begins when Eternal Sailor Moon, Princess Kakyuu, and ChibiChibi come across Sailor Heavy Metal Papillon in a graveyard in Zero Star Sagittarius, standing in a cloud of butterflies at the graves of the Starlights. She tells them that the butterflies are the "last flames of the stars," they are the remnant of dead senshi. Her job is to guard the butterflies and make sure that none of them escape. She then tells them that there are more flames yet to be extinguished and shows them three graves that are being dug (those of Eternal Sailor Moon, ChibiChibi, and Princess Kakyuu!). She attacks the three of them with vines that bind them to crosses. Just as she is about to kill them with her fire-manipulation attack, "Galactica Scales," Sailor ChibiMoon and the Sailor Quartette appear just in time. ChibiMoon uses her "Pink Lady's Freezing Kiss" attack to free her comrades. Meanwhile, the Sailor Quartette use their "Amazones Jungle Arrow" attack to kill Heavy Metal Papillon.
Sailor Heavy Metal Papillon's background story is that she gained her senshi powers when she killed Sailor Cocoon, the senshi of her home planet, and stole her Sailor Crystal for Galaxia. Galaxia had promised her that she would eventually receive a Sailor Crystal of her own and become a true Sailor Soldier. Of course, Galaxia planned on doing no such thing, as with her other minions, Sailor Iron Mouse, Aluminum Siren, Lead Crow, Tin Cat, Phi and Chi, and Lethe and Mnemosyne.
