Usagi Tsukino is a normal 14-year-old girl who lives in a house in the Juuban Prefecture of Tokyo, Japan. Usagi shares this home with her mother (Ikuko), father (Kenji), and younger brother (Shingo). She spends her time eating, playing video games, and reading comics rather than studying. She is a poor student and often comes off as dumb due to her naivete and laziness. One day, Usagi is befriended by a talking purple cat named Luna. Luna informs Usagi that she is Sailor Moon, the Soldier of Justice who must protect the Earth against any and all forces that seek its destruction. Armed with a magical brooch, Usagi teams up with Luna to locate the legendary Ginzhishou, a silver crystal that has the ability to purify evil. Along the way, Usagi discovers that she is the reincarnation of Princess Serenity, a girl who lived over a thousand years ago on the Moon during the Silver Millenium. Through an unfortunate series of events, Serenity’s mother, Queen Serenity, was killed. But the Queen’s final wish was to see her daughter and all the people of the Silver Millenia reborn on Earth, and thus Usagi and her friends Ami, Rei, Makoto and Minako, all met each other on Earth.Usagi’s love interst is Mamoru Chiba, a young man who is several years older than Usagi. Orphaned at a young age, Mamoru and Usagi first meet after the car crash that killed Mamoru’s parents. During Mamoru’s previous lifetime in the Silver Millenium, he was the Prince of Earth who had fallen in love with Serenity. As Usagi and Mamoru were lovers in their previous lifetime, so too are they destined to be together again. This is evidenced by the arrival of Usagi & Mamoru’s future daughter, Chibiusa. The most interesting aspect of Usagi is how she, as a character, matures. The strong-willed angelic Usagi that the viewer is presented in Episode 200 greatly differs from the whining crybaby in Episode 1. While Usagi’s transformation is mostly beneficial, some traits that Usagi develops demonstrate the toll that the battle has taken upon her.
