Seav, The Brainship
by Sharron Loughran
copyright 04-04-2001

Age Rating: 10 to 127

Seav sat in her berth shining proudly. Seav was a brand new brain ship awaiting her brawn you see. Seav busily ready herself for the choosing of her brawn who was to be her co-pilot. She had left off decorating the brawn's quarters. No sense she figured as she wasn't the one living there and she didn't want to offend her new brawn. But her main room gleamed in simple tones of mint green and soft mauve, colors of her choosing.

Seav mentally fan down the top three on the list of ten candidates. First there was Robin, a girl who loved opera (Seav winced at that one). Next was Jorge, very studious type by her reading of his records. Third was Melicke, a member of a high ranking High Familias family. To Seav that meant blue blood and snobbery and almost totally useless in her books for most of them. There was the odd exception to the rule. The rest she scanned and saw nothing really outstanding to be noted.

One by one, the candidates came aboard. Seav grilled each one trying to find out their interests and such. Seeing if she could find one that was close enough for her liking. One she found out was such a gung ho type, she called Central com and recommended he be anything else then on diplomatic runs, preferably survey or military where he might be more useful. After the candidates had left and gone back to their barracks, Seav "retired" to think them over.

Back at the barracks meanwhile, the candidates were squabbling over who was going to get the position, well most of them were anyways. The two or three more sensible ones sat out, letting the ones talk. Sensibly staying out of the middle of things.

Seav consulted her notes and weighed the pros and cons of each candidate before finally deciding on one. Picking Helena, a very nice girl it seemed by the interview and very smart too. Only fault she had was that she also was from a High Familias family but a minor one at that. Seav was determined to put that dislike aside and accept the girl for what her studies showed.

Seav conned Cental and informed her of her choice of brawns. Central thanked her and called the candidates barracks to report the outcome to them. When the candidates heard that the announcement was about to be made, they quickly quieted down.

Helena gasped when she heard her name for she figured she was unlikely to be chosen. Stammering her reply yes, she would get her things together and report to the ship. Her classmates congratulated her for being the lucky one. Some of them were rather envious of her luck.

Helena presented herself to Seav who's officical brainship designation became HS-7003. Helena quickly settled her things in her quarters and joined Seav in the central cabin, to await their official papers and their first assignment. They would have many adventures together before Helena retired to settle down and Seav bought herself out from Central Worlds.

Please note I've edited my story after reading Bob's article on plagerism. I looked and read the title of this realizing that Anne McCaffrey/Mercedes Lackey's novel, The Ship Who Searched also had a brainship called Tia. To prevent this being flagged, I've changed my character's name as not to be the same.

Hi, Sharron! You read Anne McCaffrey too, eh? Good story. A fellow ex ts'er and fellow Canajun, Bunny
